Oceanside 70.3 Roast Chicken Challenge

A few weeks ago, the SoCal Triathlon team gathered after a Saturday ride for some post-workout grub. For those of us in attendance, the experience was jaw-dropping. Alex, Martin, and Darren reenacted an eating display that hasn’t been seen since the Middle Ages. They ordered a huge pile of roast chicken from The Chicken Shop at Westcliff Plaza in Costa Mesa. As soon as the banquet-sized platter arrived at the table, they were at it like a pack of hyenas. I don’t think there was a single fork or knife in sight, just fists full of roast chicken dispatching the meat as fast as possible. What a sight!

This experience has inspired the IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside – SoCal Triathlon Team – Roast Chicken Challenge. This friendly wager is designed to make race day (April 5) just a wee bit more exciting. Simply put, the best-performing participants against their previous IRONMAN Oceanside 70.3 PR will be treated to a roast chicken meal from The Chicken Shop by those lower down in the rankings.

We already have half a dozen athletes signed up for this challenge: Alex, Darren, Greg, Mark, Martin, and Mitch.

Note that with Alex’s childhood nickname being “The Garburator,” celebrating his legendary ability to EAT, the rest of us will need to empty the tank on race day to ensure that he is footing the roast chicken bill when it comes due. Let the games begin!
